AT 1230 PM CDT...1730 UTC...THE CENTER OF HURRICANE RINA WAS LOCATED
NEAR LATITUDE 18.1 NORTH...LONGITUDE 85.8 WEST. RINA IS MOVING
TOWARD THE WEST-NORTHWEST NEAR 6 MPH...9 KM/H. A GRADUAL TURN TO
THE NORTHWEST WITH A SLIGHT INCREASE IN FORWARD SPEED IS EXPECTED
THIS AFTERNOON...FOLLOWED BY A TURN TOWARD THE NORTH ON THURSDAY.
ON THE FORECAST TRACK...THE CENTER OF RINA WILL BE MOVING NEAR OR
OVER THE EAST COAST OF THE YUCATAN PENINSULA ON THURSDAY.

NORTHWEST IS EXPECTED TONIGHT...FOLLOWED BY A GRADUAL TURN TOWARD
NORTH AND A SLIGHT INCREASE IN FORWARD SPEED BY THURSDAY. ON THE
FORECAST TRACK...THE CENTER OF RINA WILL BE MOVING NEAR OR OVER THE

NIGHT AND THURSDAY.
MAXIMUM SUSTAINED WINDS REMAIN NEAR 110 MPH WITH HIGHER
GUSTS. RINA IS A CATEGORY TWO HURRICANE ON THE SAFFIR-SIMPSON
HURRICANE WIND SCALE. SOME ADDITIONAL STRENGTHENING IS FORECAST
DURING THE NEXT 48 HOURS...AND RINA IS EXPECTED TO BECOME A MAJOR
HURRICANE TONIGHT OR WEDNESDAY.

1. The latest update is, the center of Tropical Storm Alex was estimated to be near latitude 17.5 N and longitude 87.2 W. This position is about 70 miles east of Belize. Alex is moving west northwest at 9 mph and is expected to continue on that track for the next 24 hours. Maximum sustained winds are now 45 mph with further strengthening expected. However, strengthening will be limited due to the storm’s proximity to land.
What is expected to happen Tropical Storm force winds of 50 to 60 miles will start affecting the northern and central cayes at about 2:00 pm local time this afternoon, and
Storm surge of 3 to 5 feet is expected along the northern coast and cayes. Sea conditions will become very rough.

Flood Simulation Exercise
The National Emergency Management Organization (NEMO) in collaboration with the Belize Electric Company Limited (BECOL) and the Cayo District Emergency Committee are preparing to conduct a flood simulation exercise.
The exercise will be conducted in San Ignacio and Santa Elena this coming Thursday, January 28th starting at 7 in the morning.
The aim of the simulation is to establish the warning and evacuation requirements in the event the dam breaks and to inform the public what should be done to save life.
