CABEI REAFFIRMS ITS COMMITMENT OF COOPERATION
WITH BELIZE
The victims of Hurricane Dean will receive
assistance with funds donated by CABEI
Tegucigalpa, Honduras: As part of
its strategy to support the region, particularly in the face of natural
disasters, the Central American Bank for Economic Integration, (CABEI), has
once more joined cooperative efforts to contribute to the emergency and
rehabilitation work of its member countries affected by recent natural
disasters.
In order to provide emergency
assistance to the population of Belize
affected by Hurricane Dean, CABEI approved non-reimbursable cooperation of
US$100,000 to support the country’s relief and reconstruction efforts. The
hurricane left approximately 30,000 displaced in Belize.
CABEI will present the cooperation funds to the
Government of Belize.
The Government of Belize has adequate
mechanisms for the reception and appropriate distribution of these funds, as
well as for respective supervision and follow-up, which will fortify the impact
of the aid.
Likewise, US$100,000 were approved for Mexico and
US$200,000 for Nicaragua to contribute to the most pressing needs of the
inhabitants of the areas affected by Hurricanes Dean and Felix, respectively.
In Mexico there were more
than 90,000 displaced and in Nicaragua
more than 50,000.
In the face of the magnitude of these
natural disasters, CABEI´s Board of Directors and Executive President expressed
their feelings of solidarity with the peoples and governments of Nicaragua, Belize
and Mexico.
They also expressed their willingness to contribute to the reconstruction and
rehabilitation of the countries to further the rapid recovery of their
economies.
CABEI, the
leading provider of financial solutions for the region, has three strategic
axes that guide its actions: (1) poverty reduction; (2) regional integration
and; (3) the competitive insertion of the Central American economies into the
global economy.
