Update on Relief to
Disaster Areas-5
Belmopan, August 30th,
2007- NEMO’s relief efforts
to those persons in the Northern Districts of Belize who were affected by
Hurricane Dean continue.
Today, there
continues to be a decrease of persons sheltered in the north. A total of
fifty-six persons are now sheltered in the Corozal District. Due to the passage
of a tropical wave yesterday, three families have taken refuge in the San Pablo and Trial
Farm Community
Centers in the Orange Walk District.
An additional
shipment of metal roofing, galvanized and roofing nails, clothing, bed sheets
and blankets are scheduled to arrive tomorrow in Corozal. These items will meet
the additional requests by affected residents and will ensure an uninterrupted
supply to those who need them most.
Today, the Belize
Telemedia Limited reported that they have completed all repairs to community
telephones and cell sites in the affected area. However, a few ‘secondary’
repairs still need completion in Sarteneja, San Narciso, San Joaquin and parts
of Corozal Town. These additional lines are
expected to be repaired shortly.
In addition to the
many local and foreign medical teams working in the villages of Northern Belize
to monitor and prevent any health risks; the Belize Medical Associates has also
announced that it will be sending a team of doctors this weekend to Chunox and
Copper Bank and another team to San Narciso and Louisville. The aim of these medical teams is
to provide additional medical care where needed most.
While the National
Emergency Management Organization, its partners and donors have met many of the
needs that have arisen as a consequence of Hurricane Dean, the public is
encouraged to continue donating items such as baby and children’s’ clothing,
baby diapers, baby formula, construction nails, construction lumber, hammers
and other hardware items commonly used in construction and home repair.
