Ground-breaking ceremonies were held in Hope Creek Village on Monday, August 11, 2008 for a housing construction project to relocate a number of residents in the Stann Creek District who were recently affected by flooding caused by Tropical Storm Arthur.

Ground was broken by Minister of National Emergency Management and Stann Creek West Area Representative Hon. Melvin Hulse and Canadian High Commissioner Mr. Kenneth Cook whose Government is contributing

a portion of the funds for the project as well as labour through elements of the Canadian Military. Labour is also being provided by the Belize Defence Force, hired carpenters from the area, and the residents themselves who are benefitting. Funding is coming from a number of sources, both international and local.

Twelve houses are already under construction on relatively high lots owned by some of the affected residents who reside in wooden houses in the low-lying Melinda Forest Station compound. Other suitable plots of land have already been identified and are presently being subdivided to create new house lots for the remainder of residents who must relocate.

Other officials present at Monday’s ground-breaking ceremony included NEMO Coordinator Ms. Noreen Fairweather; Chief Executive Officer in the Ministry of National Emergency Management, Colonel George Lovell; Brigadier-General DarioTapia; Chairman of Hope Creek Village Mr. Vicente Chen, and Project Co-ordinator Mr. Wilbourne Cuthkelvin.
