Hon. Melvin Hulse, Minister of National Emergency Management (NEMO), Transport, Public Utilities and Communications yesterday embarked on a nation-wide tour to visit various District Emergency Offices and Hurricane Shelters in the Corozal District.

NEMO Minister, Hon. Melvin Hulse (center) and other officials review the facilities at one hurricane shelter in the Corozal District.
The main objective of the on-site visits is to make an assessment of the present conditions of the Hurricane Shelters in the coastal districts of Belize.

The Minister is being accompanied by the Coordinator of NEMO, Col. George Lovell (Ret.), Training Officer for NEMO, Col. Shelton Defour, Corozal NEMO District Coordinator, Joselito Lopez, Belize's National Fire Chief, Mr. Henry Baizar and Engineer Wayne Williams.

The tour commenced with visits to several designated Hurricane Shelters in Copper Bank, Sarteneja, Chunox and Progresso Village. Concerns expressed today by residents included the need for the upgrading and/or construction of more accessible sanitary facilities at some locations and the renovation of the existing infrastructure at others.

During the tour, Minister Hulse expressed his desire to eventually construct large-scale Hurricane Shelters for each district that would have the capacity to house 3,000 to 5,000 evacuees.

Assessments were done at Copper Bank Inn, La Immaculada R.C. School, Chunox St. Viator Vocational High School, Chunox Community Center and Guadalupe R.C. School in Progresso. The Corozal District has fifty-four designated Hurricane Shelters within the town and twenty-four villages that it encompasses.

Following these visits, the tour continues into the Belize and Stann Creek Districts.
